East Meets West
East and West will collide in brilliant harmony on April 26, at The Miller Outdoor Theater.
Dance of Asian America, led by Director Janie Yao, will present all new authentic award-winning choreography from China. Each dance will bring the cultures and traditions of various regions in China to life through high-caliber dance. Dance of Asian America is Houston's premier non-profit Chinese Dance Company presenting dance by national award-winning dancers from China and professionally trained local dancers. Their work ranges from authentically classical to cutting-edge contemporary. The presentation of Eastern dances will also include top dancers from Houston Chinatown's Mitsi Dancing School in new choreography from the heart of China.
Representing the West are three highly esteemed local dance companies: Revolve Dance Company, led by Directors Amy Cain and Dawn Dippel (named by Dance Magazine as one of the top 25 dancers to watch in 2008*), is one of the fastest growing contemporary companies in Houston. Revolve will offer two pieces featuring their signature innovative choreography in ballet, modern, jazz, and tap by precision dancers. The Realm of Commonality explores human nature's duality in being both vastly diverse yet universally common. Mosquito's Tweeter is an upbeat, high energy piece fusing contemporary jazz technique with a street style tap known as hoofin'. Ad Deum Dance Company, led by Director Randall Flinn, is one of Houston's most established modern dance companies portraying no less than the most elegant works unto God. In additional to the two phenomenal works by Flinn, Apology and Might Spirit, they will premiere Walk of Promise, a new work by choreographer Randall Flinn, which reflects upon the endurance of the human spirit to keep walking in trusting faith towards the hopes and promises of the future. Barbara King Dance Company dancers, featuring Billy King, Kevin King and Patricia Kaniowski whom are ranked third in the nation, will present a collage of ballroom dance styles in Passions.
Journey from the East to the West to witness the unique cultures around us… be enthralled by passionate winds from the Himalayas, find yourself melting with the sensual movements of Rumba and Tango, and allow your heart and soul to walk the path to heaven - all while uniting within the realm of commonality that we all share as a single human race on this planet. This evening in the park will be fun for the whole family!
