The victim was a student who came to the United States to learn English and get an education. By the time crime scene investigators wrapped up their work at this corner of Chinatown Sunday morning, Ryan Chen, 26, would already be dead. The always smiling graduate student was gunned down "The policeman told me he was shot three times," said Chen's friend Ling Luo. "Who could shoot someone three times?" Hours before the shooting, community activist Ling Luo met up with Ryan at the Houston Rockets game. They agreed to meet the next day to do some volunteer work, but Ling would never see the young man again. "I can't believe he's gone, I just can't believe it, I looked at his picture and his last words to me was see you tomorrow Auntie Luo," she said. Saturday night, Ryan wanted to go to Chinatown to eat a late dinner, never knowing what would happen next. "I was horrified I was so shocked, it seems unbelievable that Ryan is such a happy go lucky, open minded, full of life," said TSU Professor Dr. Latita Sen. Sen was one of Ryan's professors at Texas Southern University. She says the entire urban planning department is devastated, but in his short time in America, Ryan touched a lot of people including council member Peter Brown. He was also one of Ryan's professors. "We have to do something about crime in Houston, we got to do something different than what we've been doing, it's getting out of hand," Brown said.

I hope my recollection will bring comfort to all of you.
It took me almost a week to accept the truth that he had left us. There are no words powerful enough to express how much we miss you-Ryan.
Recently, I started to think about what Ryan has left for us: his cheerfulness, his gracious smile and his positive attitude, his thoughtfulness, his braveness and kindness. Whenever I complained about life being tough, he always encouraged me to hang in there. He always painted a bright future for me. “Just study hard and graduate,” and “Make your parents proud” he said. Yes, he certainly did. Not only making his parents proud, we were pride to have him around. He was a vivid role model for us.
Ryan was such a people’s person with a big heart. He loved his family, all of his friends, his work and his study. He also knew how important it was, being an international student himself to help those around him. He helped countless people to find apartments, buying cars, and even arranged time to grocery shopping for them. His kindness and affectionate heart brought comfort to so many people around him.
I always asked myself what is the most important thing we need to carry on for him. Positive attitude is the first thing that comes to mind. We need to have confidence to deal with difficulties in the future. I hope people he liked and cared for will remain strong and carry on his spirit to live a better life.
I am studying at a Catholic school. Please allow me to use Catholic way to pray for him.” In the name of father, the son and the holy spirit, Amen. Lord God; you are always faithful and quick to show mercy. Our friend Ryan was suddenly taken from us. Come swiftly to his aid. Please have mercy on him and accept him into your kingdom, comfort his family and friends, by the power and protection of the cross. We ask this through Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.”
Ryan- you will always be in our hearts and we will carry you in our memory forever.
To his parents: uncle and auntie please accept our deepest condolences.
