Went to both Fungs Kitchen and Ocean's Palace.. Ocean Palace is better.. they have more dim sum dishes and the place is just bigger.

Not that I am aware of. Being working in the Galleria for 10 years.

Ocean Palace was terrible. I went there for Dim Sum for the first time since moving here from NY/NJ today. If this is the best DimSum place like most people said, then I better try to accept that there is no good DimSum place in Houston.
Let me tell you why we didn't like it 1) Most dishes were overcooked 2) Shrimp dishes were not fresh, my wife had upset stomach afterward 3) limited dish selection for Saturday lunch hour 4) Overhyped and over priced
So now since we just had this horrific experience with the "best" DimSum place in Houston, it will probably take us 1-2 months to have the courage to try another dimsum place again. I guess we will try Fungs Kitchen next time.

Houston's dim sum can't be compared to LA's or NY's. Just have to get accustomed to it.

Also they should have better control of their seafood's freshness. My wife had minor food poisoning from their food yesterday. She threw up all day and finally felt better this morning. We have had decent dim sum from other smaller asian cities such as detroit as well, so I don't think we are expecting too much here.

I agree with the dim sum at Ocean's Palace. The last time I was there with my family I didn't like it too much. I honestly don't remember it being that bad before. I remember about 2 years ago that place was packed but now it's quite empty. I started going to Fung's Kitchen just because I didn't know anywhere else that was decent. Honestly, I agree with whoever said that California dim sum was better. Not too sure why. All in all, most dim sum to me has been good but never great. Most of them tastes the same or more oily than the other. Here's a small list of dim sum places I've heard of in Houstn. a) Kim Son-Sugarland and Bellaire b) Golden Palace-inside the Beltway on Bellaire c) ocean's palace d) Fung's Kitchen-extremely crowded on the weekend! e) dim Sum King-Very small place where Imperial Palace Dim Sum used to be in the 80's. I forgot what the name of the strip is but it is where Bodard's and the original Star Snow Ice is located. Oh yeah...near jungle cafe. I haven't tried it yet but a friend has been there and said it was okay.

My rating of Houston weekend dim sum restaurants with additional commentary. All in all, not a great difference in food quality for me from 1-6. 1) Fung's Kitchen - Great quality and Cantonese taste. 2) Golden Palace - Serving dim sum for 20+ years, through a couple owner changes. Traditional carts, great taste. 3) Kim Son Sugarland - Very nice dining room. Bring bread to feed koi fish outside. 4) Kim Son Bellaire - Sunday service relatively fast. Pretty good taste. 5) Yum Yum Cha Cafe - 2435 Times Blvd (Rice Village). Pretty good taste but slow service. Serve dim sum at night too. Really small dining room. Order a la carte. 6) Dim Sum King - Serve dim sum at night too. Really small dining room. Order a la carte. 9) Ocean Palace - Sub par taste. Recipes are wrong. Obvious Vietnamese influence like using regular rice instead of sticky rice in lo mai gai ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lo_mai_gai). Ranking of cities where I've had dim sum. Although some were from different decades: 1) Toronto - Transplanted many of the great Hong Kong chefs. Symphony of reasonable price, large portions, best taste and food plating that looks like art. Enormous list of places. Although I've never been, I'm sure Vancouver is in the same level. 2) Hong Kong - home of dim sum. 3) San Francisco - lots of Cantonese. 4) Houston - Hey, we're not so bad. 5) London - Had some very good places, but over all I actually think Houston had more dim sum places that were good. 6) LA - caveat: I last had dim sum here 30 years ago. 7) NY - tried one place that was ok.

I have to agree with Cookiekaikai here. my husband also got a severe case of food poisoning that led us to a hefty hospital bill worth x150 times than what we had to pay for a dim sum meal at ocean palace. I believe something in the food aint right...definitely rotten, undercooked seafood. I do not wish to come back to the bellaire area for a very long time. my husband and i's dramatic experience with Ocean Palace has put a bitter end to my crave for dim sum. somebody should have thought of sending a food and health inspector from the city to this place already.

I've eaten dim sum for over 20 years and have never gotten sick and have loved dim sum ever single time.

I studied abroad in Hong Kong, so I had the pleasure of enjoying authentic dim sum for 4 months. When I got back to the States, I hated every restaurant I tried: Marco Polo in Austin, Tien Hong in Austin, Fung's Kitchen - Houston, and Ocean Palace - Houston. Dim Sum King is the first place I thought that even got close to Hong Kong quality. The food is very fresh. The only downside is that the restaurant is small, and the wait can be long. Part of the fun in dim sum is watching the carts go around, but that doesn't happen there. It's too small for carts, so you have to order a la carte. Nonetheless, I loved it and will be back.V

I like Golden Palace. They have good dim sum on the weekends. I showed up at 12:30PM. And they were very busy, and had to wait.

Dim Sum King! ;D It's the best and very fresh! (haha, it kind of rhymes) They make the food when you order, so you do have to wait alittle bit. The only thing I miss is the carts (like in Ocean Palace). But thats okay, because the dim sum is much fresher/better than OP anyways.

Dim Sum King by far. I know the owner, and she and her family moved from california to houston, and they have the ABSOLUTE BEST dim sum in town. You actually spend less time there than at ocean palace or kim son, since you make an order and it gets cooked right away. I'd say the max time i spend there is 30 minutes, with 3-4 other people.
It's also cheaper (:
