does the MP4Star record in MPEG2 format? « Thread Started on Nov 12, 2006, 2:33pm »
with the name starting 'MP4' it may seem like an obvious answer, however the technical specs are not clear and I am trying to get clarification.
if anyone has one, I would be grateful if you could tell me how easy it is to use for recording video... my goal is to plug in a head/bullet cam and record in MPEG-2.
if it does record to MPEG-2 then it seems like the only product on the market that can do this, everything else records in MP4.

I believe it only records in AVI format (compressed). It does not record in mpeg2. Like you said, there are not many (if any) out there that record in mpeg2 format.

thanks for reply, can anyone who owns one clarify this?
out of interest there are a couple of small mpeg2 recorders out there (stack and something else), however they cost over £1000 and are designed for commercial use.

AVI in its natural uncompressed state is a very big file. For a 1 minute video in raw AVI format, it will use up ~20-30MB. As you can see, this is not very efficient and not many storage devices can handle this type of size.
Compressed AVI (usually in DIVX format) is much smaller in size. About 1/10th or so. I think that is what he was talking about.
Now this player, I think records in MPEG2 format and AVI Format as well. I have a contact number for the company that sell this: 832-549-9093. Your best bet would be to give them a call.

no response yet - I wonder if the company is still trading? not very promising. maybe they won't ship to the UK so can't be bothered responding to UK enquiries?
has anyone actually got through to the company? Chinatown must have... what's the best way to contact them?
